We're talking about one of the biggest superstars in the history of Bollywood. And, SRK falls in quite an elite company: Bajraj Sahani, Guru Dutt, Dilip Kumar, Dev Anand, Raj Kapoor, Rajesh Khanna (THE superstar), Amitabh Bacchan, Dharmendra, Aamir Khan, Salman Khan, and Shahrukh Khan.
He's an outsider who made it, but so was Rajesh Khanna.
The whole debacle about Raaes isn't because SRK is an outsider. That's hardly the case. From Mohabattein to Rab Ne, SRK delivered staggering Hits in between. He's remained the most consistent of all Khans. The quality of his work was declining, but as a star – he was right up there. He still is.
The comparisons haven't helped him – add to that his movie choices, and that's why SRK isn't considered the force he once was. Salman's legendary run right now, which is only toppled by Rajesh Khanna in the late 60s and early 70s along with Aamir's huge hits at the BO have taken a toll on SRK. The expectations are high because his contemporaries are turning the heat.
Fan was bound to fail. It was just a poor movie. Raaes, as good as it may be, can't stand up to Salman's Sultan right now – so it was a good move. Movies like HNY and Dilwale along with colossal disappointments like RaOne and JTHJ doesn't help him either.
He needs to reinvent himself. That's it. His next movies like Raaes, Imti's next, and Aanand L Rai's next all indicate that SRK is going for it.
There was a time when Salman was considered the star in the trio; Aamir the actor; and SRK a mixture of stardom and acting. That was his strength. He's moved away from that image trying to play catch up to Salman. Whereas Aamir has maintained his streak of doing one quality movie after every commercial movie, and Salman continues to play to his strength – SRK forgot what made him great.

My college professor was his batchmate & he always used to say that Shahrukh was never poor but nor was he affluent.
His father’s family used to (& still mostly) reside in Pakistan where as his mother who was a govt. offcial belonged to a well-to-do Hyderabadi family. His family lived in Central Delhi where his father ran a canteen & they lived a good life until he died. Then his mother raised both of the kids alone, SRK did some gigs alongside but it was his mother & her family, who mostly supported them.
But then after a few years, when his mother also met her sudden demise, his family severely collapsed. SRK by then had already became a part of a few TV serials but the money he received from them wasn’t enough to afford a good life, not to mention, also clinically help a severely depressed sister.
Therefore he came to Mumbai with the leftover money & a dream, blindly accepted whatever roles he got offered, maybe got lucky as almost all of those either became iconic or the movies that they were a part of, became big hits & thus gave rise to the name Shah Rukh Khan…
According to my sir, if SRK & his sister would’ve received proper financial support after his mother’s demise then he would’ve never done small roles in plays & TV serials, in fact he would’ve never chosen the acting gig in the first place!
